This course deals with the functioning of the global financial system, including the banking system and the capital markets system. It discusses the main building blocks that comprise these systems, as well as the goals, strategies and limits of the regulatory frameworks that govern them.
In banking, the accent will be on prudential regulation, bank governance and bank resolution.
In capital markets, the focus will be on issuer disclosure regulation and market integrity.
In terms of the regulatory frameworks, the course discusses and critically analyses the main principles of financial regulation adopted in the EU, in the UK and in the US.
The course aims to build knowledge of the key regulatory issues affecting banks, markets, and other financial institutions. It encourages students to understand the evolution of the global financial system, to analyse recent developments in regulation and practice, and to engage with the limitations of current international financial regulation. Through this, students will gain a deeper understanding of how regulatory frameworks shape financial activity across major jurisdictions.
