This seminar delves into the relationship between gender and law within the European Union (EU) and international legal contexts. The course explores the origins, development, and challenges of integrating gender perspectives into human rights law discourse and practice. From the inclusion of women’s rights to addressing LGBTQI+ issues, students will critically examine how legal frameworks respond to these dynamics. Through the study of feminist legal methods and queer theory, students will engage in critical analysis, deconstructing sex and gender biases within legal systems. The focus areas include human rights law (including issues of gender-based violence, reproductive rights, and how legal frameworks address gender stereotypes and discrimination) and migration and refugee law (namely gender-related issues in asylum claims, family reunification, and human trafficking).
