Today in our Meet Our Students series, we introduce Catalin-Ioan Pantiru, the 2024/2025 recipient of the ELSA Scholarship and a current student in the LL.M. in International Business Law at Católica Global School of Law.

Catalin began his legal journey at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași in Romania, where he completed his LL.B. in 2024. His academic path reflects a strong European dimension, including an Erasmus exchange at Université de Poitiers in France, where he focused on French and comparative law. His legal education was further enriched by hands-on experiences: a four-month internship at Lexters Lawyers—one of Romania’s leading IP firms—and a study visit to the European Court of Justice.

When asked about joining Católica, Catalin describes it as entering a “Global Legal Hub.”

“I looked forward to learning alongside international students and practicing lawyers, taught by professors from some of the world’s top law schools. What excited me most was the chance to discover how much I still didn’t know, to step out of my comfort zone, and broaden my horizons—all while enjoying the vibrant life of Lisbon.”

The ELSA Scholarship—offered annually to one outstanding member of the European Law Students’ Association—has been pivotal in making this experience possible for Catalin. The full tuition waiver reflects a shared mission between CGSL and ELSA: supporting law students who are committed to academic excellence, global engagement, and giving back to their communities.

“Receiving the ELSA Scholarship validated the philosophy that has guided me since high school: ‘Life is the sum of your choices. Choose to give back, and life will return what you gave—and a thousand times more.’”

A dedicated ELSA member, Catalin has organized 11 local projects, participated in prestigious moot court competitions, and worked with international organizations such as WIPO and the WTO. He refers to ELSA as a “second alma mater”—an organisation that gave him the tools, exposure, and network to grow into the legal professional he is becoming.

Now at CGSL, Catalin appreciates the flexibility of the LL.M. curriculum, which has allowed him to explore more than 50 course options and engage in practical Skills Seminars. His experience has helped him distinguish between fleeting interests and lasting passions—and even uncover new areas of law.

“I achieved more than I expected—academically and personally—while enjoying memorable adventures and building lasting friendships.”
