Lodewijk Van Setten

Invited Professor
Lodewijk Van Setten has wide ranging experience in advising on and managing legal, regulatory, and operational risks in the financial services industry. As General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer at the investment management divisions of Morgan Stanley and State Street, he has had oversight of the governance, control, and continuing regulatory compliance of the manufacturing and distribution of traditional and alternative investment strategies and products to a global client base. Recently, Lodewijk has returned to private practice at, among others, Allen & Overy and KPMG and has been advising financial services institutions.
Lodewijk teaches a course on the law and regulation of financial markets and services in the LL.M program of King's College, University of London, where he was appointed Visiting Professor in 2005. He is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Nijmegen and the University of Leiden. At Leiden, he teaches a course in the LL.M program on the law and regulation of investment management. He publishes regularly on topics relating to the law and regulation of financial markets and services, most recently The Law of Financial Advice, Investment Management, and Trading (Oxford University Press 2019). He holds an LLB|M and a PhD from the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, and an LLM from Duke University, North Carolina, USA, where he was a Special Staff Editor to the Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law. He qualified to practice law in The Netherlands, the State of New York, and in England and Wales.
